Nebo and Glenden sit in the northern Isaac Region, west of Mackay. They share a region but not much else when it comes to buying a home.
Nebo
Nebo is about 100 km west of Mackay and about 100 km from Moranbah. The town was surveyed in 1865 as Fort Cooper and grew as cattle country before coal. In the 2021 Census, coal mining employed 21.3% of working residents, with fuel retailing and local government each 6.4% and rail freight 4.4%. Of occupied homes, 90.5% were separate houses; 28.4% were owned with a mortgage, 23.3% owned outright and 42.7% rented. The Census median rent was $279 a week and the median mortgage repayment $1,300 a month (2021 figures, not today's prices).
Glenden
Glenden, in the northern Isaac Region west of Mackay, was built by Mount Isa Mines in the early 1980s to house workers at its Newlands coal mine. In the 2021 Census, 87.0% of occupied homes were rented and only 3.9% were recorded as owned outright; 52.5% of private dwellings were unoccupied on Census night. Coal mining employed 42.6% of working residents.
Glenden's future has been in the news. In 2023, Queensland amended the Mineral Resources Act 1989 to require QCoal's Byerwen mine workforce to be housed in Glenden in stages, with the whole workforce in town by 31 March 2029 under the original timetable. In September 2026, the Queensland Government opened a registration of interest for land parcels in Glenden and introduced a bill to repeal that requirement, saying the aim is to open the town to residential and small business investors. If you're looking at a home or land in Glenden, talk to us early: with so few owner-occupied homes in town, lender policy for 4743 needs checking case by case, and we can't promise any lender will lend there.
Roster income
Base pay is the easy part. Overtime, shift penalties, site and travel allowances, bonuses, labour hire and contracting are where lenders differ, and two lenders can count quite different amounts from the same payslips. Our free Mining & FIFO Borrower Pack has a printable document checklist and a plain-English guide to how lenders usually look at each part of your pay.
Buying in Nebo & Glenden: what lenders look at
Lenders don't all treat 4742 and 4743 the same way. Some limit lending in some regional and mining-town postcodes, for example by asking for a bigger deposit or lending a smaller share of the value; others are comfortable lending there. Policies change, so we check current lender policy for 4742 and 4743 before you apply, not after.
